Various Organ Functions of Pet Turtle

Do you keep turtles as your pet? They are very easy to be taken care of and have a mild temper.

How much do you know about the turtle? Let us briefly introduce it! Turtles are ectotherms—animals commonly called cold-blooded—meaning that their internal temperature varies according to the ambient environment. However, because of their high metabolic rate, leatherback sea turtles have a body temperature that is noticeably higher than that of the surrounding water. Turtles are classified as amniotes, along with other reptiles, birds, and mammals. Like other amniotes, turtles breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water. Turtle have various organ functions that we do not know, let’s see below.

1.Skin

The biggest feature of the turtle skin, except for the front end of the head, is rough。 The epidermis has fine-grained or small-scale scales, which protect the dermis, reduce friction with the outside world and reduce the evaporation of water in the body.

2.Breathing method

The turtle's telescopic movement of the neck and limbs directly affects the size of the abdominal cavity, thereby affecting the enlargement and contraction of the lung. When the turtle breathes, it exhales and then inhales the gas. This special breathing method is called “pharyngeal” breathing, also known as “turtle suction”. The turtle's respiratory movement can be observed from the contraction of the skin membrane of the turtle's hind limbs.

3.Smell

There are two nostrils on the glans, but there is only one nasal cavity. The bones in the nostrils are covered with epithelial mucosa and have an olfactory function. The pear nose is their main olfactory organ. Because when the turtle is looking for food or crawling, it always stretches the head and neck for a long time to explore the smell and then decide the direction.

4.Vision

The turtle's eye structure is very typical, its cornea is convex, the lens is more round, and the ciliary muscle is well developed. The curvature of the lens can be adjusted to adjust the line of sight. Because the turtle's field of view is generally wide, but the sharpness is poor. The turtle is more sensitive to moving objects but slow to the still objects. According to British zoologists, most turtles are able to distinguish colors like humans, especially the red and white colors.

5.Hearing

The turtle's auditory organs are only the inner and middle ears, and there is no outer ear. The outermost part of its ears is the tympanic membrane. Therefore, the turtle has a slow reaction to airborne sound. It is more sensitive to ground sound. Therefore, the turtle is almost considered to be a deaf and dumb animal.

As we have known more about them, I am sure you can take care of them well now! Although turtles do not need much water like fishes, it is still vital to keep clean aquarium water for them and provide them a comfortable living environment. You can try this
in tank filter. It can increase oxygen and is easy to install. This Turtle Tank Filter is also great. It has double filtering: enhanced activated carbon and filter plate to improve water quality.
