What is the Difference between Biochemical Cotton and Cotton Filter?

Biochemical cotton is a widely used filter material and it is mainly used for biochemical filtration. It is suitable for ornamental aquariums such as saltwater fish tanks, freshwater fish tanks and aquatic plants fish tanks. It is mainly used to culture nitrifying bacteria which can decompose toxic NH3, NH4 and NO2 in water and convert them into non-toxic NO3. It can improve water quality and increase fish survival rates. It is a filter material with both physical and biochemical filtration effects. It has good elasticity, big surface area and is not easy to be damaged, moreover, it can effectively filter impurities in fish tank water.

Biochemical cotton has small holes and higher density.

Filter cotton has big holes and lower density.

Biochemical cotton is not easy to cause blockage, mainly used to culture nitrifying bacteria to break down toxins in the water. Filter cotton is mainly used to filter fish feces and food residues, which is easy to be blocked and requires frequent washing. If the two are used at the same time, the water is usually passed through the filter cotton and then the biochemical cotton.

Biochemical cotton has a higher density than filter cotton and is not easily damaged, and it is much thicker. Therefore, there is enough room to let nitrifying bacteria parasitize. Moreover, it is also possible to filter out some big impurities. That's why it can be said that biochemical cotton is a kind of filter material for both physical filtration and biochemical filtration. Biochemical cotton is widely used in different types of aquarium filters, such as upper filters, external filters, and internal filters.

It is very important to choose good biochemical cotton. First of all, pay attention to its drain ability. Pay attention to check if the water can pass the biochemical cotton swimmingly. Biochemical cotton that does not significantly slow down the water flow is good biochemical cotton. Choose the one with relatively higher density and more holes as biochemical cotton with poor water filtration will slow down the flow of water. Try not to choose biochemical cotton that is soft and inelastic because it will affect the biochemical effect.

Biochemical cotton does not need to be replaced frequently, usually, it can be replaced once every two months. If you find that it is less resilient, the inside of it is broken and it is easy to become tattered after washing, you need to buy a new one. When we need to clean it, use water in the tank to clean it and gently scrub it a few times. Do not wash with tap water as there are a lot of nitrifying bacteria in the biochemical cotton. If it is washed repeatedly with tape water, nitrifying bacteria inside will be washed away easily at the same time. The nitrification effect will be greatly reduced, causing instability of water quality.
